Nine nights under the aurora, and the one that stayed quiet
The cabin was a ten-minute walk from the station, which at minus twenty-six is long enough to stop feeling your eyelashes. I had booked nine nights because every forecast I read said the odds get better the longer you stay. What nobody tells you is how much of the waiting happens indoors, next to a kettle that never quite stops ticking.
Most evenings went the same way. Wool socks, a thermos of tea, the torch switched to red, a slow walk down to the frozen lake. Some nights the sky gave everything: green curtains folding over each other, pale pink at the hems, so bright the snow threw shadows. Some nights it gave a faint grey smudge that I only believed in once the camera confirmed it.
Night six was the clearest of the trip. No cloud, no moon, stars down to the horizon. I stood on the ice for three hours and nothing happened. Not a flicker. I walked back feeling oddly cheated, as if the weather had broken a promise it never made.
“The sky owes you nothing. That's exactly why it's worth waiting for.
From the notebook, night six
It took me until the train home to understand that the quiet night was the best one. It was the night I stopped chasing and simply watched: the cold, the silence, a village of a few hundred people asleep under a sky the size of a continent. Slow travel is not a style. It is agreeing to be somewhere long enough that the place can surprise you, including by doing nothing at all.
