How to find your ring size at home

Two reliable methods with nothing more than a strip of paper or a ring you already own, plus the small details that make the difference between snug and perfect.

The best way to know your ring size is still to visit us and try a sizing set. But if you are ordering from home, or planning a surprise, you can get very close with what is already on your desk. Our rings are made in US sizes 4 to 10, and every ring includes free resizing in the first year, so a small miss is never a disaster.

Before you measure

  • Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest.
  • Make sure your hands are warm. Cold fingers can measure a full half size smaller.
  • Measure the exact finger, on the exact hand. Most people's dominant hand is slightly larger.
  • Measure three times. If the results differ, use the middle one.

Method one: paper strip

Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger, the way a ring would sit, and mark the point where the paper overlaps. Lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. That number is your finger's circumference. Paper is better than string, which stretches and twists.

  • 46.8 mm: size 4
  • 49.3 mm: size 5
  • 51.9 mm: size 6
  • 54.4 mm: size 7
  • 57.0 mm: size 8
  • 59.5 mm: size 9
  • 62.1 mm: size 10

If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Method two: a ring you already own

If you have a ring that fits the same finger well, place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter, edge to edge, at its widest point. Do not include the metal. Use this guide: 14.9 mm is a size 4, 15.7 mm a 5, 16.5 mm a 6, 17.3 mm a 7, 18.1 mm an 8, 18.9 mm a 9 and 19.8 mm a 10.

Your ring should slide over the knuckle with a little resistance and sit without spinning. If it needs soap to come off, it is too small.

Small details that matter

Wider bands feel tighter than fine ones. Our Nova signet has a 2.2 mm band and fits true to size, but if you are buying a band wider than 4 mm anywhere, go up by a quarter to a half size. The same applies if you plan to stack three or more rings on one finger. If your knuckles are much larger than the base of your finger, size for the knuckle and ask us about sizing beads, which keep a ring from turning.

And if you are buying a gift and cannot measure at all, choose the most likely size. We resize free of charge within the first year.
